 Young Mothers

teen mom

Did you Know?

The negative outcomes for both mother and baby for women giving birth in their early years are identifiable, they include:

  • the fact that teens drop out of school.  Only 1/3 of those moms obtain a high school diploma
  • that teens do not receive adequate prenatal care and this highly impacts the birth outcome
  • and the cost of teen pregnancies from lost tax revenues, public assistance, child health care, foster care and involvement with the justice system is estimated to be about $9 billion annually

Most importantly we also know that children born to young moms face a multitude of risks such as...

  • premature birth and low birth weight
  • poor school performance
  • physical and emotional abuse
  • poor overall health
  • a higher incidence of being placed in foster care
  • developmental delays
  • higher rates of fetal death
  • living a life below the poverty level

The United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world.

How can you stay informed?

The Healthy Teens Act protects teens by requiring that public schools receive state funding and provide comprehensive, medically accurate and age appropriate information when teaching about sexually transmitted infections, family planning and pregnancy.
This Act promotes communication and responsible decision making.

Jody-Smith Williams has joined her husband Ross in his White Street Chiropractic and Nutritional Therapy Clinic.  Together they will offer health and wellness education, healing and support to our community.
We wish her the best!

We are pleased to welcome Leah Stockton as the newest addition to the Healthy Start Coalition staff as the Administrative Assistant.  She is originally from Atlanta and moved to Key West in 2005.  Leah and her husband manage the Six Toed Cat restaurant on Whitehead Street and she freely admits to being a "foodie".
Leah graduated from Berry College in Rome, GA, with a degree in journalism and public relations.
She also tutors as a Literacy Volunteer.
